Bhanmatie Gangaram admits that before she became a vendor at the Flatbush Market four years ago, she had no idea it existed. She had been searching for a place to open a business of her own after years of working for others. When her daughter stumbled across the market and Gangaram came to visit it for herself, she realized it was a perfect fit.
Gangaram, originally from Guyana, had worked long hours as a medical processor and as a vendor at the NY Javitz Center before finally deciding to go into business for herself. She says “I wanted to be my own boss. If I was working so many hours for someone else, I figured, why not do it for myself?”
Just like that, S&S Fashion was born. Gangaram specializes in women’s clothing, which she also carries in plus sizes, which are difficult to find any where else in the area. Though the clothing Gangaram sells is mostly made in California, she makes sure that her merchandise has a specific connection to the Flatbush community. “I walk around the area to see what people are wearing, what they like.” Gangaram says she draws inspiration from her customers and their styles in deciding what to sell at her booth. She tries to sell items that her customers would like, but that are unique and one of a kind.
Though keeping up with the trend of the area keeps her busy, Gangaram often helps out with the booths of some of her neighbors at the Flatbush Market. She describes the 40-plus vendors as having a real bond and being a tight-knit community. “We are like a family. Everyone helps out.” When asked to describe the market in one sentence, Gangaram simply said, “It’s like a home away from home.”
