When Loveth Howell moved from Nigeria to New York City, her dream was to continue to braid hair as she did back home and own and operate her own hair salon. As a housewife managing a household of three children her dream seemed out of reach until a friend suggested applying for a booth at the Flatbush Caton Market.
The Market’s affordable rent and business training classes gave her the confidence and means to start Rise & Shine a salon specializing in Africa hair braiding and extensions.
“To own my business here? I mean, this is big for me,” says Howell. Howell loves being independent, earning an income for her family, making her customers feel and look good. In the eight short months since she started at the market she has already expanded her business to include unique African jewelry imported from her homeland. She credits the market’s prime location to her success and has built lasting relationships with other merchants and customers who live in the community.
Over the next year Howell wants to continue expanding her business to include a boutique selling original fashion and accessories from Africa and a bigger salon to continue her passion for hair styling and her connection to her country.
